I carry a Leatherman multi tool which does have a knife, actually several.
2008-07-04 06:52:52 UTC
Yes a small Swiss Army pen knife. I use it most days for some function. I have never been in a fight (now 44 years old) and would never use it as a weapon.

The trouble is that knifes are now a fashion/ status symbol with some children. As they are young they do not think through the consequences of their actions before they use the knife.

Apparently there has been a massive crackdown on carrying knifes in London recently. The only to stop the problem is make it a minimum jail term of 3 years for any one under 21 to carry a knife. I would love to see what the civil liberties brigade have to say about that.

I don't need to carry a knife in a pubic place, indeed you put yourself at more harm carrying one, as it can be taken off you and used against you.

As for a knife crime happens every 52 minutes, that includes domestic disputes, and I am sure that of the couple of dozen people stabbed in the UK every day that a good deal are domestics or are actually stabbed by someone they know.

The police have also launched searches at transport interchanges, street stop and searches, you can be searched in places such as shopping malls, there are searches on the doors at nightclubs, teachers now have access to knife scanners, and if you ever used a knife the chances are it would be recorded on CCTV .

You are better off trying to keep away from areas you don't feel comfortable in or people that might cause conflict in the first place, than to go out with a blade.

I carry one for two resons: I live in a crime ridden city, I want to have some protection if attacked. I have a gun in the house, because sure as can be, the robber will have a gun and will shoot you in a second if they see you with no protection. A bat is too slow, you *** will be shot or beaten before you could finish your swing at them. #2: it comes in handy for cutting seat belts if needed, and help in other situations that need cutting. Also, it's more concealable from criminals, who if they saw it, would go after you just to prove they are tougher than others or could attack because they see you as being vulnerable. And, it helps in protecting your self when someone attacks you. I guess if I carry a knife I am a coward, by Moron standards!!!!!! you carry nothing, I guarantee, you will be a victim at some time. knifes are easier to get than guns, when you are a criminal. So, that may be why knife crime is up in the UK.

Most people who consider a knife as a weapon are young folks. They see it as a macho image. Us old folks have carried pocket knives all our lives and we just think of them as tools. I carry an old 4 inch sod buster that has cleaned many deer, cut up many steaks and whittled countless pieces of wood, but it's never cut anyone except me. I've been in countless fights and never saw a need to pull out a weapon. It just seems like young people these days are so afraid of getting a bloodied nose they'd rather kill someone over it!

I am definitely showing my age and culture here.

When I was younger, and where I live, people, especially men, carried knives all the time. Still do. hell, the guys I went to school with almost always had a jack knife in their pocket (and a rifle in their gun rack in their pickups at school.) We call them jack knives and they are used as tools. In fact, it's only been in the last few years that I have heard people upset over others carrying knives due to their fear of them being used as weapons. I never knew anyone who even considered a jack knife as a weapon.

Where I come from, a knife is carried and used for cleaning out finger nails, cutting the twine off of hay or straw bales, cleaning out the gunk in the middle of a calve's hoof to see why the critter might be limping. We use them to loosen the dirt around a bigass weed in the garden, or to adjust the idle on the lawn mower, etc.

But then, maybe we're too damn busy to think about hurting other people with something like that.
2008-07-04 07:23:05 UTC
Yes...handy around the farm, cutting bales or when animals get tangled up.A knife is basically a tool, used in the country side from time immemorial.. But like everything else..using 4 x 4 vehicles for instance...we all suffer when the city folk go over the top.

Yeah, i carry a knife!

3 weeks ago i was held-up a knife point and since then, i don't go anywhere without a knife! I'd never threaten anyone else with it... unless they where gonna hurt me(physically), i have no problem with using a knife to protect myself, done it before and will do it again if i have to!

It's a dangerous world out there!

I don't carry knives for self-defense. If you're not very skilled at knife fights (since you're probably not a street mugger, I'd say you aren't), your enemy can easily take your knife and attack you with it. Also, if you're against a criminal with a gun, a knife can serve only as an agitation to the criminal.

An option I use is carrying a pistol for self-defense. Some prefer concealed carrying, but I usually open carry, since it's pretty hard to get a CCW permit in Calif. I carry Glock 17 with extended magazine. Up until now I've only once confronted a gun-toting robber and he went running when I shot and missed him.

I'm not familiar with the UK laws, but if you want to carry a gun for self-defense, you have to regularly visit your local shooting range and get a good instructor to teach you how to shoot. Also, you have to be able to handle a fist-fight in case your gun misfires or you get disarmed.

I carry a knife in my purse. But not for Self-defense purposes.Sometimes I just need it to open something. Came in handy as a "screw-driver" too.

Remember weapons don't kill People,People do. And I am sorry for the sarcastic answers.

Some People think taking a life is a joke and don't consider other ppls feelings.

Yup, I carry a knife. Two in my truck and normally one in my pocket. Also carry a .45. A .45 beats a knife almost every time!

In communist Russia, you don't carry a knife.......your knife carries you!

Anyway who needs a knife when you are being attacked? I mean there's plenty other pieces of crap lying around that you can use to beat someone half to death with if they tried to attack you, bricks, rocks, timber, glass bottles.

And if I drove I'd hunt the parasite down and run him over.

yes always --i believe all men and boys should carry a pocket knife

i also make my own knives

one other thing --alaways carry a serrated end folding knife with you in your car or your pocket to cut seat belts if you or some else is in a car wreck

i have come upon a wreck scene where people have been burned alive because their seat belts jammed and they couldnt get out

you may be able to rescue someone in trouble

I do carry a knife. Only at work though as I work in a Stores and have to open boxes.
2008-07-04 06:51:27 UTC
No I think the kids should get free self defence lesson in howto dis-harm someone with a weapon, and should also get free attack alarms,if the kids stand together in numbers knowing how to help one another and what to do first aid,if someone is stabbed, maybe it shall be a step in the right direction.

nope

baseball bat in my house and will use it on anyone that decides that want a piece of my house

knifes are too dangerous least if you are armed with something like a baseball bat if someone broke in you can keep your distance if they had a knife you could hit there hand and then pop there knee cap and ring the gardai and they can't go no place !

Yes, as well as a gun. Knives come in very handy in all types of situations. I have only had to use my gun off-duty twice, but glad it was there both times.
