Question:
Do electronic speed limit signs issue tickets?

I was driving through a neighborhood in Schertz Texas, when I noticed an electronic speed limit sign that shows you your speed. Yes it was stupid, but I decided to see what happens if I exceed the posted limit. I've seen these before and generally they are on a trailer that the local PD drops off, and when you exceed the speed limit, the numbers flash alerting you that you're going too fast. This sign was not on a trailer, it was permanently posted in the ground just as a normal speed limit sign would be. When I passed the sign going approximately 7 miles over the limit, I noticed a few flashes as if photos had been taken. This was not the numbers flashing as I expected, I am almost certain it was the flash of a camera. Should I be expecting a ticket in the mail? Thanks to any police officers or public officials that can answer for me!

No, they can not issue a ticket for speeding from a camera. What I do with these kind of "signs" is try to get the high score.

Sec. 542.2035. LIMITATION ON MUNICIPALITIES. (a) A municipality may not implement or operate an automated traffic control system with respect to a highway or street under its jurisdiction for the purpose of enforcing compliance with posted speed limits. The attorney general shall enforce this subsection.

(b) In this section, "automated traffic control system" means a photographic device, radar device, laser device, or other electrical or mechanical device designed to:

(1) record the speed of a motor vehicle; and

(2) obtain one or more photographs or other recorded images of:

(A) the vehicle;

(B) the license plate attached to the vehicle; or

(C) the operator of the vehicle.

This happened to me too but I did some research and it seems as if that is a Speed Violator Strobe that flashes to warn violators. It definitely gets your attention and you'll tend to slow down, at least look at the speed, or worry whether you're going to get a ticket or not. Cops usually use that indicator to pull over violators but laws usually state that you can't be issued a speeding ticket via camera. If there is a cop sitting there then you should be mindful of the strobe.

Someone needs to take the speed and stop light cameras that issue automatic traffic tickets all the way to the US Supreme Court. These electronic devices violate our Constitutional Rights, namely a right to face the accuser in a Court of Law. I obey traffic laws so they don't bother me but I still don't like them.

You didn't sign something saying that you were guilty. You sign, not as an admission of guilt, but so that you will show up in court. You got caught speeding, and now you will have to pay. It will not get thrown out of court.
