Found money given to the police - what happens next?

My mother found a pretty substantial amount of money on the street today. She turned it into the police and they said "well, we'll see what happens in the next nine days". What does that mean? Does that mean that if no one claims it in 9 days the money goes to my mother? (I am not exactly betting on this since people would notice if they lost this amount of money). But what is the procedure for dealing with lost money (in Pennsylvania) by the police?

If it is unclaimed she can have it. Im not sure what the time limit is but if its not picked up she can lay claim to it. Im certain of that.

I would suggest calling someone higher up in the department, like the police commissioner's office - let them know you are following up and ask for the specific rules or regulations on how this is handled. That would give you a foundation on which to claim the money if no one else claims it and increase the chances that it is handled properly. You could go to the newspapers but then it would publicize the loss even further - however, the rightful owner might wish to give your mom a nice finders fee.

She did the right thing. How would you feel if you lost the money?

I think they'll first check the serial numbers, to see if it's stolen. If not it's should be hers in thirty days or maybe it's nine in your state. They should have been very clear to her about this. I believe that if the rightful owner tries to claim it, and they believe it's the right person, they would have to show you some kind of proof.

I feel strongly that they'll be honest and upfront about it, but you never really know, do you?

There might even be a reward. I hope it works out well for you and your Mom.

I hope your mother got a receipt for the money. And the name of the officer that she turned it over too. She should go back and ask him if anyone has claimed it. If he says that they did then check with internal affairs to see if they can trace it and that the officer did correctly write in the item. Being a watch dog is good for the community, so don't feel badly about doubting someones statements. Even the police.

I think it's 30 days if no one claims it it's hers.

But the cops will probably say someone claimed it and keep it themselves.

she should have just kept it. and ran an ad asking if the person knows how much was lost.

depends when 30 days is up. what they feel like doing with the money is on them. you may see it but don't hold your breath
