What would the penalties be if one was to expose an informant or undercover and get caught?

Penalties? You wouldn't have to worry about them. But FYI, interfering with police officers duties will get you some time if you live long enough. Do you think the bad guys will embrace you and protect you? You in their book are a fink, which to them is the same as an idiot,. Why would you do that?

There's a fine line between interfering with an investigation, and simply warning people not to break the law.

If let's say, you were to tell a buddy of yours who's out looking to pay for some poontang "hey, see that chick on the corner dressed as a working girl? Stay away from her, she arrested me once so I know she's a cop" I doubt you could get arrested just for that. There have also been cases of motorists being arrested for warning others about speed traps ahead, all of which were dismissed by the courts. It probably depends on how big the operation is, and if you're putting any of the cops in direct danger.

That would be against the law in Canada and pending what occurred as result of your stupidity could be different criminal charges (same as a felony) from Public Mischief to Criminal Negligence causing Death or injury (pending what happened after you ratted them out).
