Don't you think risking your life every day is being worth to get paid well?

It depends on where they work and how much they get.

Police officers and state police, up until recently, were high school grads. Many still are, never having gone to college, but making more than almost everyone who is a social worker, teacher or anyone else in a helping profession who usuall have a graduate degree.

They are in the 6th most dangerous profession.

I think they earn what they get, probably many times over, but society devalues them like the do nurses and social workers.

I would like to get 20 Million dollars a picture and make 60 Million a year a year, or be a baseball player making 16 million a year. Now they really deserve it.

Yeah, I live in Chicago right before and during Mayor Richard J. The police were way under paid then and they were expected to become shake down artist but the democratic machine kept them in check. Like running a stop sign or red light might cost you $5.00. If the cop wanted more you just took the ticket and for $10 the clerk at traffic court would hand you the complete file.

Today running a red might cost you over $100 that goes into some politician's pocket to support his lavish life style. As for me I'd rather hand the cop the money rather than the politician getting it.

Most police officers have seen things that would burn the eyes out of a normal person. Police may sometimes look like they aren't busy, but when that call comes in to save someones life or scrape someone off of the highway, then they are vastly underpaid. Depending on where you live and your tax base, usually determines the wages of a police officer. I am a Deputy Sheriff and I make under $35,000.00 per year. My duties also include being a deputy coroner. How much would you charge to go look at and investigate every death that occurs in your county? I have seen little kids die and women die, needlessly. I have been to several funerals where a fellow officer has been killed in the line of duty. Almost every one of my "cop" friends have been through at least one divorce. Speaking from experience, we are very underpaid!!!

When I first started as a police officer I was making a whole $635 a month and I had a college degree. I moved on to the federal government but people I left are not getting rich any time soon.

HELL no!!! if any thing the police officers are not paid enough. Most of them put up with a lot of bull s*** from dumb a** people and don't make no where enough for what they have to go thru.

Police are overpaid on purpose for a reason. While it is hard to put a price on safety and sacrifice, history has demonstrated that a well paid police force for reduces the risk of corruption. I mean, if they are corrupt, what hope do regular folk like me have?

NYC in the 70's had rampant corruption just for this reason.

OVER PAID?! I think they are way under paid. One in Philadelphia just two weeks ago just wanted 4 hours of overtime and got blown away. I don't think they can be paid enough to risk their lives everyday and to put up with the jerks and worse that they have to deal with.

I believe that No Police officers are paid enough. Every day they go out there into the community risking their life. Maybe a psycho might pull a knife on them, maybe a drunk may pull a gun or a robber shoot him, maybe he might give his life today to save someone from a burning car, or maybe, just maybe he will get throught his day safely and once more be able to go home to his wife and children at least for one more day. Just maybe.

Overpaid? Not even close. But then, when people argue this they are usually pointing to the big city law enforcement executive with the six-figure salary, they aren't usually referring to the podunk county sheriff's deputy or city policeman that barely makes $6.50/hour.

I don't look for it to change either. And it's not the citizens fault, it's the crooks in elected office(and no, not all elected officials are crooks.)

I think some officers are paid what they deserve, and most are underpaid. Just like teachers, and most other careers that are part of public service.

NO! They are underpaid if anything else - they have a very risky job in most cities as you never know what kinds idiot you are pulling over or what idiot's house you are having to go to...

Not at all, where I live they start around 24,000 per year, they are on call all the time, and many times risk their life to enforce the laws.

Gosh, just watch the crappy job they have to do, not to mention the destroyed social life they have to endure. I don't think it's a matter of payment, but a matter of respect. They deserve more respect.

WAY underpaid.

I hate them, myself, but you have to admire the job they do - never knowing what they might be going into, but going into nonetheless.
