Question:
HELP!! Basketball court in neighbour's back yard drives me nuts!?

My neighbour has paved in his back yard and has added a basketball net. There are 5 young people living there (between the ages of 13 and 20+). When they play basketball (about 3 - 7 times a day), it sounds as if it is being played in my living room (bang, bang, bang, crash - you get the picture). Is there anything I can do about this, besides move???

Oh gosh, yea, we know how this feels.. we are having a big problem with neighbours kids playing basketball in their driveway, right next to ours! As a result, their friggin ball keeps bouncing off our cars! This is driving us crazy! We have tried to stand out there, to give them some hints, but this does nothing! They just keep doing it! Last night we talked to the parents, and they said they would try moving the net, but have not done so. And really there isn't much point in that, as the area is so small it wouldn't make any difference! We are just furious at how little respect people have for other people's property these days! Anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this, without causing WW3?

Have you ever seen the bumper sticker that says "skateboarding is not a crime?" Well, playing basketball is not a crime either. If the BB court is on privately owned property you have no rights until after 10 pm. In most places it is considered distrurbing the peace if you have loud noises/music after 10 pm and before 7 am. That probably is not the case since they are children playing. Yes, it can be very annoying, but I would be impressed that these children are outside playing sports instead of locked inside playing a million hours of video games or out on the street spray painting the neighborhood with gang tags. What do you want from children?? They are outside playing. That is what children are supposed to be doing. If they are yelling a lot while playing you may have an option to talk to the parents and ask if while playing they can keep that to a normal volumn, but again they are playing a sport on privately owned property during the day you don't have much to fight legally. You may want to move to the country or a nice retirement community where you will get a bunch of old guys throwing horse shoes and playing golf instead. Up to you.

They will grow up and move out sooner or later.

Also, the novelty of the new court will probably wear off and they will play less in the future.

Our local city by-law covers all types of noise at all hours. You are not allowed to make any noise that disturbs others but it has to be a reasonable complaint. If you complain you neighbour mows his lawn 3 times a week at 2:00pm then nothing will be done about it. You may find it difficult to convince a by-law enforcement officer that the ball playing noises are unreasonable.

Personally, I would either move, or tough it out using other sound proofing suggestions already mentioned.

Hi Sue;

Unfortunately, I think your energies will be best spent on sound-proofing measures. Keeping windows on that side of the house shut and perhaps getting some heavy drapes which might dampen the sound somewhat.

They make ear plugs from visco elastic memory foam (Hear-O's is one that I know of) available at your local pharmacy. They aren't too uncomfortable. there are different levels of sound dampening... I use the strongest ones. A pair of comfy headphones with some easy listening music might do the trick as well.

With all the time that my kids spend in front of the television, I have to say that I would have been elated if they'd used the portable basketball net their mother and I got for them. But, for us, it was such a hassle for the kids to set it up to play (we don't have a back yard) that they just opted to stay inside instead.

Most parents would assert that it's a good thing that those kids are being physically active... and you might decide to suffer a few minor inconveniences for the benefit of the childrens' physical health and well-being.

Good luck with it.

I can understand this new noise being annoying, but perhaps you are stressed out and that is why you find it annoying. Try some form of relaxation and if that does not help then ask them nicely to reserve play for a specific time of day.

I would love a basketball court in my yard, it is good exercise and keeps them out of trouble. At least they are not throwing wild parties and having people come and go at all hours.

It is a tough question because I can see both sides. Maybe you will get used to it. I hope you find a reasonable solution.

If you add a good privacy fence AND plant some arborvitae or norway spruces in back of it, that will go a long way to reduce the noise. If you can afford it, make a wall out of concrete blocks, but check you local code first because sometimes that is not allowed.

Start smoking, and go outside when they are out and smoke up a storm.

Or plant a bunch of tall hedges along the fence.

Complain to the homeowner association.

Ask a lawyer about this.

Talk to your neighbor.

Serve Ex-lax Brownies to them (ha ha --just kidding--NEVER do harm to another!)

Move, if it really gets to you. I feel for you. Mine have a squeaky trampoline and my dogs bark at them incessantly.

Well you could always just shoot them.

That seems to be what most people do in America nowadays, shooting people over stupid stuff.

Don't be a p ussy about it. Walk over there, tell the the situation, and ask nicely, but firmly, to move the goddamn net.

depending on your city, there are noise violation laws you can look into. i'm guessing the best you will be able to do is get them to only play at certain times. (extremely early or late would be covered in most city statues). other then that, i would simply go over and ask that they play only at certain times. i wouldn't get the law involved until you have asked them to be "neighborly" first.

Play with them or go out when they are playing

find out what your zone laws are, did you speak with you neighbor yet? also you can go to your council man, or your monthly neighbor hood meetings.

Best answer - sound proof windows

Less expensive answer - sound dampening curtains (they do exist)

Cheapest answer - turn up your radio

have you tried asking the kids/parents to try to keep it down? the kids in my neighborhood toned it down when i let them know they were being rude to the other neighbors.
