Of course some departments use GPS. Most officers though know their way around the city/county that they patrol.

Most law enforcement cars do not have any GPS navigation systems or any GPS tracking in them. Most are lucky to have a paper map in the glove compartment. Although a near by city is going to add a GPS tracker to their fleet to start monitoring where their officers/cars are.

Most officer tend to get to know the area they patrol on a daily bases.

Most do not have GPS. Although maps are always a good thing to have on hand. You learn directions by doing. You drive the roads day after day and fairly soon, you just know "how to get there". When my training officer broke me in, he would take me out in the boonies and get me in an area I had never been in before. Then tell me to get him back to the office. This was usually done at night. You learn to recognize landmarks and where they are in relation to roads, intersections and other easy to find locations. Believe me..I've used a map many times. And I've been lost many times.

We know our area by learning the good ole fashioned way-driving around and figuring it out!
