How do you make a traffic violation go away?

My dad (Canadian) was sent a notice in the mail 17 years ago stating how much money he owed for a traffic violation he could NOT have committed (he has log books to prove he wasn't anywhere near there) in Fresno County, California, 2 years earlier. He never received a copy of the ticket, or a notice to appear, or anything like that. Just this notice of money owed.
Is he safe to enter the States, so long as he avoids California? How can he clear this mess up?
NOTE: He's not going to California to clear it in court.

17 years ago and he is just NOW getting around to making an enquiry in to it?? Wow, I thought I put off things.

You know it was most likely issued before the Depts were even computerised so they would have to do a physical search for the cite on a micro fiche. If he is really worried he may be able to call the Clerk of The Court (Traffic) for Fresno CA and make an enquiry, and chances are he'll be told that it is way to old, if they happen to find it just hope to God they haven't been accruing interest on it all of these years!!!

Throw it in the trash..I am certain should he ever get arrested for the traffic violation the courts will not be able to find the ticket. Even if they did it would be dismissed the odds on the Officer that wrote the ticket still being on the force is slim and none. That officer would have to be in court.

Your father is safe. Traffic offences are not extradictable under the Canada Extradiction Act.

Even if he were to cross, I don't think it comes up at the border because he wasn't convicted nor an arrest warrant issued.

But check with U.S. Customs and Immigration on their website.

And if he were to travel to California, they would only know if he has an outstanding fine if he were (ironically) stopped for a traffic violation or involved in some crime.

right here in a province in Canada, the cost of rushing is going up the quicker you have been using. So in case you have been doing 20 over the shrink, it extremely is 4 x $fifty 5 = $220 plus the not signaling = 290. How approximately you call the NJ dept that deals with it? See how they calculate it? courtroom looks like an prolonged inconvenient worry.

I can't say for sure but I doubt that California has even kept track of this. I don't know what the violation was but if it was a minor traffic violation, it probably isn't even a mess.

As long as he stays out of CA he is fine. Even then it is pretty unlikely something that old would have any repercussions at this point.

I would call and ask for details. What info did they use to link the violation to him? That happened to me and i called and had it cleared up.
