I'm watching a movie, and one of the characters was reported missing 15 years ago by her parents, and she just came back to town. She ran away for some reason (haven't gotten to that part of the movie yet). So, naturally, the family is sort of relieved she's alive, but pretty ticked that she never contacted them in all these years...but what about the police?

Isn't this like crying wolf or something? Not for the family...she was really missing. But would the girl who's reported missing get in trouble for it because she wasn't in any harm? She knew they were looking for her, she wasn't in any harm, and she was more than old enough to call in and report herself safe. And even though the cops only hold on for a certain amount of time before the parents take control, the police department still spent a lot of money on the case. Isn't there some sort of action they'd take?

No, not unless she false-reported she was abducted, or something similar. Just leaving is not a crime.
