Is it all by memory that they know which direction they're going, or is this something that they learn in the police academy?

GPS units, radio traffic, and video footage.
While in a chase, you keep radio traffic with dispatch as to direction and speed. You can recall this later to refresh your memory.
Many sqauds also have GPS units, you can get a printout for the case file.
You can also review video camera footage, but that takes longer.
The vast majority of chases are actually quite short, and you may not need any of the above.

Depending on the city. But most of the number for the address on the east side and the south side are even, the west and north are odd. And also the numbered streets are mostly east/west.
Example would be if you lost track of direction, see if the street sign have like "S 2300" block to "S 2400" block and next "S 2500" block, you know you are going south bound due to the increasing numbers for the block and the decending number on the S block you are going north. Same goes for north, east and west.
But after you drive so long in part of the city, you will know what direction you are driving. Of course know where the sun rises helps during day time.

West - possibly PA. East - I stay in Jersey, so basically a pair states alongside the coast. North - long island South - FL have not been to all that many places in the US. Farthest i've got been everywhere is Germany however. replaced into born there and in simple terms visited final October.

usually memory. you also know that certain roads run north and south and others east and west. the interstate where I live is a north/south interstate, but actually runs east and west for 20 miles or so. I will say southbound when it is actually going east, because the road is a north/south road. it does get confusing at first until you learn the roads and the general direction they head.

its actually very simple, in many cities certain streets run north and south while others run east to west. in my city, named streets run east to west and numbered run north to south. we also have a couple rivers that you can navagate by and that divide our city into quadrents. there are also a few more ways taht i can tell which direction im going but they get a bit complicated if you dont know my city so i wont mention them.
also when you are patroling the same area over and over again, you become very familar with what dirrection your facing. they are trained for it and eventually its so natural to know which way you are going that you dont even have to think twice about it. many police officers already know their dirrections prior to going into the acadamy but the acadamy does teach it to you.
learning which way you are traveling is a good skill to have for any driver and not just police and other emergancy workers. you can learn about your city and which diretion you are going by asking a drivers ed teacher, the dmv or just look at a map and try to figure it out yourself.

Sometimes it's GPS, a compass mounted in the car, or memory.
