I want to put a GPS unit in my patrol vehicle but I don't know what is the best? I have heard both good and bad about units that connect to the laptop and the ones fixed on the dash. i am looking for somthing to give me quick directions and the best route along with side streets.

In my experience, Garmin Nuvi products are rock-solid reliable, and have an intuitive interface for locating addresses. That is, they ask for the house number before the street - a lot of units do it the other way around, for the convenience of the programmers (not you). You still have to enter the destination city and state every time on every unit I've used, which is not convenient for patrol, but I haven't seen an alternative to that.

I've found Magellan products reliable too, but haven't used them as extensively. Everything else I've used crashes when I need it the most.

I've been using a Garmin Nuvi in my patrol vehicle for a couple years and I love it. Granted, you should only use it as a tool in addition to actually KNOWING your streets and your way around your patrol area. The only problem with this unit or any other stand alone unit is you'd need to input each destination in the device each time you want to use it As you probably know, in this line of work, sometimes the seconds count in getting there and putting every address in your navigation device can be impractical. Oh, and the gps coordinates feature has saved my butt a couple times being in really remote or rural areas and trying to explain your location :) Good luck, be safe!

The cheaters existence could be an open e book besides and that they could be thoroughly sparkling approximately the place they're in any respect cases to learn back the believe they lost. If the GPS documents is used as a back as much as ascertain that they have got been the place they pronounced they have been, then this is a healthful gadget. yet whilst the only that became cheated on intends to aim to apply it perpetually to secret agent on their substantial different, then they're greater advantageous off divorcing because of the fact they're going to never circulate on.

Now Corey , do you really expect us to believe an Officer is asking Yahoo what is the best GPS? If you were an Officer the Dept. would be providing you with their choice of GPS.

The best one is the one the Dept buys by the score and gets a discount for.

Alaska State Troops use garmins mounted to the windshields. But, I'm not sure on the set up of your rig so take it with a grain of salt. From personal experience, TomTom's are garbage. Not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES , TomTom has taken me to a cemetary as my destination.

If you have a smart phone I would go for that option. Make it your GPS, it's pretty handy.
